When the utility opens, find and click on the option that says Users in the left sidebar. Then, find your admin account in the right panel, right-click on the account, and select the option that says Rename. You are all set. The administrator account name has been successfully changed on your Windows 10 based computer. Local Group Policy Editor can also be used to change administrator name and the following is how you do it. Head to the following path and open the entry that says Accounts: rename administrator account.
You should be able to create a new user account for your Windows 10 computer. Once created, reboot your PC and you will see the traditional sign-in screen prompting you to enter your password to access your account.
If you use a Microsoft account with your Windows 10 PC, you can use the Microsoft website to change the name for your administrator account. Launch the Start Menu, select your account, and choose the option that says Change account settings. Select the option that says Manage my Microsoft account and it will take you to the Microsoft website.
You are all done. The name of the Microsoft account integrated with your Windows 10 system has been changed. You will find that the new name appears everywhere on your computer. If you are an admin user on your PC and you ever forget the password of your account, you can get your entire computer locked out as your PC won't let you access your account without a password.
Those having a normal account won't be able to execute admin tasks. Because the Administrator account exists on all Windows server versions, renaming the account makes it slightly more difficult for attackers to guess this user name and password combination.
By default, the built-in Administrator account cannot be locked out no matter how many times a malicious user might use a bad password. This makes the Administrator account a popular target for brute-force password-guessing attacks. The value of this countermeasure is lessened because this account has a well-known SID and there are non-Microsoft tools that allow you to initiate a brute-force attack over the network by specifying the SID rather than the account name.
This means that even if you have renamed the Administrator account, a malicious user could start a brute-force attack by using the SID. Rename the Administrator account by specifying a value for the Accounts: Rename administrator account policy setting. The following table lists the actual and effective default values for this policy. In Windows Server , this policy setting is not configured in the security templates, nor is a new user name for the account suggested there.
This is so that numerous organizations reading this guide will not implement the same new user name in their environments. In later versions of the Windows operating system, the preconfigured security templates were removed. Report abuse. Details required :. Cancel Submit. CmdrKeene MVP.
