Motorola z8 software

There's a 2-megapixel camera with flash, and the Z8 has a sumptuousmillion colour 2. But the real talent of this phone is multimedia Thanks to clever marketing by Motorola this phone has been set up to show you the phone's talents from out of the box. This throws in a sharp-looking Bluetooth stereo headset, plus a MB memory card that provides a full version of the action blockbuster The Bourne Identity.

The Matt Damon movie is a great bit of marketing. Being able to get "DVD quality" movies on memory cards is nothing new; they have been available for several years for certain compatible smartphones. This phone provides the necessary software to show the technology, as well as a popular movie. It is a great foil for the superb processing and screen characteristics of the Z8.

The really clever stroke, however, is the headset. We have been banging on about stereo Bluetooth headsets for a long while now as being the perfect add-on for your multimedia phone, allowing you to listen to MP3 tracks and video downloads in full stereo, without the need for wires. With the Z8, Motorola's S9 Bluetooth headset comes as standard.

It looks smart, and gives great performance, and has its own rechargeable battery which like the phone itself can be topped up by connecting to a USB port of your computer, if you don't have the mains charger to hand. Although this is billed as an entertainment phone, what Motorola deliberately fail to big up is that the Z8 is actually a fully-fledged smartphone, and a rather interesting one at that.

But this phone doesn't use the Series 60 platform that was used on the ill-fated Sendo X. Instead they have used the alternative Symbian UIQ platform. This is usually reserved for phones with stylus-controlled touchscreens - but here it used to on a phone that uses a conventional keypad, joystick and softkey interface.

With Bluetooth stereo profile support you can enjoy your favorite tunes without ever missing a call at home, on the move, while on the go! All third party images, logos and brands are property of their respective owners.

In use what this basically means is that it fits better to your face as it bends around than moving on a swivel hinge. In practice however and although this leaves plenty of room for the screen we found the keys that it revealed awkward to use and unresponsive to touch.

It's not that by pressing a key you have a delay in the number appearing on the screen, its just that you don't know whether or not you've pressed it without looking at the screen. Coming in a black and fetching lime green, the phone also sports a largish display, which Motorola hopes you think are great for viewing videos on.

We would have liked it to be bigger wouldn't we all , but it was ample for watching short programs as long as you opt for the full screen mode which rotates the image so you watch it landscape rather than profile. Where the screen wins out however, is that it supports 16 million rather than just the average k colours and has a frame rate of 30fps rather than the average To show of its movie credentials, Motorola is shipping a copy of Bourne Identity in the box and we were surprised that we felt comfortable watching the whole film on the train on such a small screen - something we didn't expect to do.

While the screen struggled with the very dark opening scenes, you could clearly read subtitles without having to strain. Of course with support for the hot-swapable microSD card up to the current 4GB SDHC cards you can transfer your own movies or programs over to watch on the go and it will certainly make train journeys go quicker.

One bizarre omission is the lack of use of the hardware cancel key. I would expect this to be a shortcut to delete emails and messages quickly, but this does not work. Instead it is necessary to choose 'Delete message' from the Options menu — this quickly becomes convoluted and tiresome when deleting any more than a few messages.

There are two key modes of operation, 'full page rendering', which shows pages as they would appear on a PC and 'fit to screen', which reformats pages into a single column for easier reading. To go with these two modes, Opera supports a full screen view and a landscape view, which are aimed at making the best use of the limited screen real estate. Opera has excellent support for web standards, but like other mobile browsers there is no support for Flash, resulting in missing content on some pages.

When working with sites designed for PC, I feel the browser does not quite measure up. The fit to screen feature does work well the majority of the time, but inevitably something is lost in the translation. While the actual rendering in full page mode is excellent, the lack of a page overview mode means a lot of scrolling is required to get around pages.

However, while it feels like the main Opera browser has stood still its competition has not. It is possible to get a quasi-overview mode using the zoom feature in Opera, but realistically this is too fiddly for day to day use. Rendering is generally very fast and problem free and the companion functions of the browser, such as multiple window support, page zooming, bookmarks, history and the ability to save pages are well implemented.

There are a number of other applications available on the Z8. These include Time alarms and time management , Calculator basic functions only and File Manager fairly comprehensive. A game, in my case Asphalt2 a racing game from Gameloft , is also included, but this may vary by market. This means it is possible to create a weekend or emergency profile which, when activated, also activates an 'allow' list, limiting the people who can call you to a pre-approved list e.

This is a potential solution to the problem of combining a work and a personal phone without being always available. There are also a number of other mini-applications and applets within the Control Panel folder, such as the previously mentioned Profiles see part 1 , Speed Dial, Call Timers and Storage Wizard.
